American Yakuza ...

GM HQ, Detroit ...

A dire warning that the Republic is a prime candidate to go bust has come from one of the world's leading economic historians.

"The idea that countries don't go bust is a joke," said Niall Ferguson, Harvard professor and author of The Ascent of Money.

"The debt trap may be about to spring" he said, "for countries that have created large stimulus packages in order to stimulate their economies."

His chosen prime candidate to go bust is "Ireland, followed by Italy and Belgium, and UK is not too far behind".

Argentina is top of his list of shaky countries but "the argument that it can't happen in major western economies is nonsense".

Japanese gangster van ...

Referring to the clash between inflation and deflation he added: "I don't know who is going to win but we know that while the struggle goes on ordinary people will get trampled. There will be more economic volatility and ordinary people will pay."

He has also warned that in Britain he expects "more riots in major cities this year" because of the economic situation and says the recent "drip feed" of the peccadilloes of British MPs and their expenses is "just the beginning of a crisis of political legitimacy that will be played out over the next 18 months".

Ferguson, a native of Glasgow, specialises in financial and economic history as well as the history of the British empire.

The Indpendent | Ireland set to go bust, claims economic historian

The Japanese gangster van has been circling the Web like a virus; in much the same way GM and other failed corporate behemoths deemed "too big to fail" have dominated news of the GEC. Niall Ferguson's being interviewed on CapeTalk in about half-an-hour. He's probably worth a listen ... this is not over by a long shot.

Postscript: We ended up getting the publicity blurb. For background on the Ferguson / Krugman squabble, see A history lesson for economists in thrall to Keynes and The Gold Standard.

In November 2008, the community of eMacambini held a 5,000 strong march of about 10km to protest the proposed AmaZulu Word development to be built by Ruwaad Holdings from Dubai. Earlier in the year, Ruwaad signed a memorandum of understanding with KZN Premier S’bu Ndebele. The planned R44m development by Ruwaad will occupy 16,500ha. In addition to the AmaZulu World Theme Park, plans include the largest shopping centre in Africa, a game reserve, six golf courses, residential facilities, sports fields and a statue of Shaka at the Thukela river mouth. To achieve this, the proposed development necessitates that the eMacambini community is going to be displaced from their rural land and rehoused on less land in a suburban township. If the plan goes ahead, 29 schools, 300 churches, three clinics and brand-new RDP houses will be demolished. Especially relevant to the community would be the demolishing of ancestral graves. In all, between 20,000 and 50,000 people in the region will be forcibly removed.

We are now called upon to implement our Manifesto. The dreams and hopes of all the people of our country must be fulfilled. There is no place for complacency, no place for cynicism, no place for excuses. Everything we do must contribute in a direct and meaningful way to the improvement of the lives of our people.

Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Excellencies:

We make a commitment here and now, before the eyes of the world, that:
  • For as long as there are South Africans who die from preventable disease;
  • For as long as there are workers who struggle to feed their families;
  • For as long as there are communities without clean water, decent shelter or proper sanitation;
  • For as long as there are rural dwellers unable to make a decent living from the land on which they live;
  • For as long as there are women who are subjected to discrimination, exploitation or abuse;
  • For as long as there are children who do not have the means nor the opportunity to receive a decent education;
  • For as long as there are people who are unable to find work, we shall not rest, and we dare not falter.

President Jacob Zuma
Hardly a week into his new portfolio as Minister of Transport, S'bu Ndebele is in the midst of political controversy after accepting, among other gifts, a R1.1 million vehicle from a group of contractors with contracts worth more than R400 million in his department. Vukuzakhe contractors gave a farewell party for Ndebele at the Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, apparently honouring the former KwaZulu-Natal premier for his contribution to creating a platform for small contractors to emerge. Apart from other gifts that included cattle, Ndebele drove away in a new Mercedes-Benz S500 worth R1.14 million.

"In light of the above, I have therefore advised his Excellency, the President, that I have received the gift of an S 500 Mercedes Benz valued at R1 million from Vukuzakhe emerging contractors in KwaZulu-Natal."

Minister of Transport S'bu Ndebele

On the 4th of December 2008, the eMacambini community blockaded the N2 and R102 freeways to protest S'bu Ndebele's non-reply to their memorandum handed over in a previous march. Police responded with rubber bullets injuring about 50 people and arresting 10. There were reports that many people who were shot were innocent bystanders were pulled out of their homes. There are also reports that many of the 10 people arrested were refused medical treatment. Police have justified their actions by claiming that residents threw stones at oncoming cars. The community is working closely with The Poor People's Alliance and has also lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission and as of December 2008 has planned to challenge the legality of the proposed development. On 16 January 2008 the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions in Geneva issued an open letter to S'bu Ndebele strongly condemning the proposed evictions and the violent police response to protests against it.

We Don't Need No Education ...

Kleinplaas ...

Now that we've done away with the Education ministry, it seems our leaders have more time to spend in the playground.

Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande continued to lash out at Zille when he told a National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) congress in Boksburg that Zille was running a “Bantustan of a special order” in the Western Cape. She would fail to run it effectively, as she was preoccupied with other matters.

“I’m worried if Helen Zille is still together upstairs,” said Nzimande, who is also the general secretary of the SA Communist Party.

The former Secretary General of the South African Communist Party and now Minister of Higher Education and Training — complementing Angie Motshekga's Ministry of Basic Education, offers his qualified and informed opinion on a matter of great import — which appears to have seized the collective intellect or our leadership.

Something's afoot, and it's ugly. Shouldn't Nzimande — formerly a key figure in the bloody struggle for KZN, be devoting his energies to creating an education system?

A South African's Malema ...

“Let us make it clear now: we are prepared to die for Zuma. Not only that, we are prepared to take up arms and kill for Zuma.”

The Times | ‘We are willing to kill if Zuma is tried’

In May 1994, white South Africans thought this was all behind them. "Move on," they said. "Get over it. Stop living in the past."

Dumb bastards.

And today?

Helen Zille, premier of the Western Cape, responding to ANC agitprop from Zuma's new Minister of Women, Youth, Children and Disabled People — Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya — on the composition of her provincial executive, stated (among other, better-phrased comments): "Zuma is a self-confessed womaniser with deeply sexist views, who put all his wives at risk by having unprotected sex with an HIV-positive woman."

Like nothing else, the truth always elicits strong reaction.

HELEN ZILLE CONTNUES TO EXCEL AS NUMBER ONE RACIST AND DESTRACTOR OF GENDER STRUGGLES

12 May 2009: The ANC YL is disgusted by remarks attributed to the racist girl Helen Zille, who when failing to defend her stupid and sexist decision to appoint predominantly white males into her cabinet, attacks the President of the Republic of South Africa. The ANC YL calls on Helen Zille to respect the office of the President of the Republic of South Africa and stop making stupid and degrading remarks against President Jacob Zuma.

Zille has appointed an all male cabinet of useless people, majority of whom are her boyfriends and concubines so that she can continue to sleep around with them, yet she claims to have the moral authority to question our President.

If the fake racist girl Zille continues to speak hogwash like she has been doing during elections, we will take militant action against her, and demonstrate to her that she does not have monopoly over the Western Cape.

The fake racist girl who was dropped on a head as child should understand that South Africa will never be a Mickey-mouse Republic like she wants to portray it. An absolute majority of South Africans support President Jacob Zuma and will find it very disgusting for a fake racist apartheid agent to continue undermining the highest office in South Africa.

Floyd Shivambu, ANCYL NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON

RELEASED BY THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS YOUTH LEAGUE

Sowetan | ANC rebukes youth league over Zille
The Democratic Alliance (DA), a party for which I’ve not voted, has been led by women inside and outside of government and parliament several times. The ANC has not, in its 97-year history, found a single woman suited to such a leadership role.

Lynne Brown, ANC premier of the Western Cape until ousted late in April, fielded an 80 percent male cabinet. In fact, the old movement seems still to leave most matters in the hands of “the men”.
The Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association has threatened to render the Western Cape ungovernable if its Premier Helen Zille continues "insulting" newly-elected President Jacob Zuma.

"Should Helen Zille not refrain from this anti-African and racist behaviour, we are not going to hesitate, but craft and launch a political programme aimed at rendering the Western Cape ungovernable," MKMVA chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe said in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Maphatsoe said this was not intended to send the wrong message to the world, but that veterans could not sit back while Zille cast disdain on Zuma's cultural preferences.

Independent | MK veterans threaten Zille

Shades of Hitler Hunzvi? As far as I'm concerned, you needn't send any message to the world, Bubba; President Jacob Zuma did so a long time ago.

I've been watching the comments appended to articles in the papers online. Few South Africans appear to be aware of the extent and severity of blowback they're likely to see emanating from our apartheid past.

Increasingly, white commenters are being told to "Go home" — to Germany, Holland, England, etc.

The hothead rules in times of desperation and unreason. Too young to have experienced apartheid, the average South African is deeply embittered. Continuing inequity and deprivation has been his or her lot and they resent it like hell. AIDS, poverty and a lack of opportunity have combined to form a lethal cocktail of anger and violence — which, when manifested as xenophobia last year, could safely be ignored by the wealthy elite.

Times have changed.

Spurred by fast-developing recessionary social ills, that anger is homing in on its target. With a life expectancy of 45, apartheid's children far outnumber the reasonable; those who realise that, because our histories are so different, we have to work that much harder to make it together.

Despite her propensity for telling it like it is, Helen Zille remains one of the most level-headed and fair-minded leaders we have. Yet, what are our youth expected to feel? How do we expect them to behave? Why are Rwanda, the DRC, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Nigeria, etc. so different to us?

They're not. Did we really expect to get off so easily?

Now that lobotomized South Africans are urging each other to "give Zuma a chance" — conveniently forgetting his ascent to the presidency cost us the Constitution and judicial independence (what are the odds on Judge John Hlophe walking?), the world no longer needs our platitudes.

Especially from the friends of Jacob Zuma.
One of the saddest moments and the dawn of the worst new era have come to the province of the Western Cape and its people. The intensification of racist and sexist principles of the DA (Devils’ Alliance) has reached its highest levels. The DA clearly also has no future oriented perspective as it has continually snub young people in its decision making structures, no wonder no single inclusion in the cabinet.

Not even feeling disgusted, ashamed nor any excuses for her racist and sexist appointees, she goes on to justify her exclusivist cabinet as the best she could find in the province.

As the ANC Youth League we are convinced that once again the Devil Alliance led by the racist power-monger girl has pushed us too far. The arrogant exclusion of women in the cabinet of the province which is mostly populated by skilled and intelligent women is the reverse of the gains that the women of this province and the country have gained in the last fifteen years of democracy.

Mpumelelo Mkhabela | “Zille is Devil”
Is President Zuma reining in these assholes? No, he's not.

"She has elevated her role from that of opposition to that of the enemy, an offer from the DA that we must accept."

PoliticsWeb | Zille has elevated her role to that of enemy — Gwede Mantashe

That's the man charged with calling the Youth League to heel, ANC Secretary General comrade Gwede Mantashe "... on behalf on the ANC National Executive Committee, NUMSA Mini National Congress, Boksburg, May 12 2009."

Stay? Or go? It's a peculiarly South African Malema.

A Qualified Success ...

"Yesterday's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why."

I'm considering subjecting myself to the formal education sector. It's about time I qualified in something and, loath as I am to subject myself to structured thought and strictured learning, thereby lending credence to The Academy's notion of "education", the following e-mail is suasive.

Subject: Buy your life experience degree from a reputable University

To buy a degree is quite easy these days. Nevertheless most students just sit around in their usually boring local University classes, wasting money. Why would you do that? These days buying a degree is a matter of personal motivation. But why should you buy a degree? The main reason is the fact that buying a degree on1ine is going to save you time, a lot of time. Usually you have to verify your life experience and you instantly qualify. Even though that is not the main cause why people are buying life experience degree.

The actual reason why people buy a life experience degree is because they can not go to a institution in their surrounding area that offers the diploma program they are heading for: For example, if you live near a College which only offers renowned marketing degree, then this doesn't help you a bit if you're looking for a marketing degree. To attend classes you might have to travel long distances. Then it might be that the degree that you want is only offered by a institution which costs a fortune. So you have to leave your place, look for accommodation in the University's place and do all the other stuff involved costing you tons of cheeze.

If you buy a degree by verifying your life experience or work experience, you can find the right degree for you without ever having to leave your workplace and instead get all the documents like the diploma certificate with the University's legal verification and official seal certifying the degree chosen, the transcript, a cover letter, copies of the College's or University's official certificate of accreditation, the institutions postal prospectus approval and a few important things more.

Having a University degree is very important these days, and as always in life you should only stick with something you want.

Beware choosing to be something just because it was the only good degree your local institution offered. After all, you are only going to be good at your job if you like to do it. Thus, you have to get a degree that means something to you. This used to be a task that could take you years.

Buying a degree is nothing harmful. It's a win-win situation for the Colleges involved as well as for you, getting the degree you dreamed of. Give us a call if you are interested to buy a degree from an University!

If you are interested to obtain your own degree, please give us a call at 1.718.9895.740 (INSIDE USA)

Swine ...

Kleinplaas ...

I called in sick today. I work in the CBD. There are a lot of swine about and I don't want to take any chances. Especially in light of the U.S. Secretary of Health's Public Service Announcement (PSA):

"There is evidence there will be a major flu epidemic this coming fall. The indication is that we will see a return of the 1918 flu virus that is the most virulent form of the flu. In 1918 a half million Americans died. The projections are that this virus will kill one million Americans..."
OK, that was 1976. It's now 2009 and we've learnt a lot since then, haven't we?

3,500 infected and 160 dead and we're running around like headless chickens. With masks. Whatever happened to the Avian 'flu pandemic of ... whenever?

Remember the Spanish flu of 1918? It killed anywhere between 20 and 100 million people. And that was after WWI officially knocked off 16 million.

We're addicted to the smell of our own fear. It's cheap and there's no escaping it ...

I'll spend the day listening to Dylan's new album, Together Through Life. It was released April 27 to overwhelmingly positive reviews as Air Force One and fighter escorts buzzed Manhattan and New Yorkers fled their buildings in fear of the Apocalypse.

The last time Dylan released an album to such critical acclaim, i.e. Love and Theft on September 11, 2001, airliners above Manhattan again dominated the news.

"I didn't do it," said a Columbia spokesman, denying everything. "You'll get more from the White House."

I rang Rahm.

"Hey, how the hell are you?"

"Great, Mike, you fucking bastard. What can I do for you?"

"Tell me, these aerobatic ...."

"Whoa! Say no more," interjected the Sergeant-at-Arms. "That was Barack's thing. Officially, he's pissed about it, but these photo ops don't come cheap."

"And the other stunt?"

"That was a long time ago, Mike. We're pretty keen to get to the bottom of it, but you know ..."

One thing about Rahm — 'at a loss for words' is not a term with which he's familiar.

"What?" I asked.

"Well, you'll have to speak to one George Walker Bush about that one. Officially, it was a cock-up as a photo shoot, but Bush and Cheney don't seem to agree. Either way, we're keeping the FBI from them. There's no telling what we'll uncover ..."

Again a silence.

"Like Chomsky?" I insisted. "You can't afford to go there?"

"Yeah."

"You fucking lowlife swine ..." I snarled before Wendy grabbed the phone from me and slammed it down.

"Based on assessment of all available information, and following several expert consultations, I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5. ... This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharmaceutical industry and the business community that certain actions should now be undertaken with increased urgency, and at an accelerated pace."

OK, so in thirty-three years we've learnt nothing. It's pathetic. Bob thinks so too.

Don't Look Back ...

OK, YBLOG ZA is no more — the GEC is indeed global, times are tough and getting tougher, so I tore it down. More, because I'll be spending some time at the Cape Point site before moving on to cover Cape Town, this blog will remain graphic free — a repository of comments not fit for posting elsewhere.

Although I've set up a hasty blogroll, this blog should take its own shape as time goes by. Some friends have have tossed in the towel, others have died, and still others are MIA. But most seem to just keep on keeping on and that's good. And it's also good to be able, with Zoopy and Picasa, to return to blogspot. Evan sure was on to something and my profile doesn't say "On Blogger since January 2002" for nothing ...

One new addition to an old blogroll ... Sentletse Diakanyo, who speaks my mind on whatever's rotten in the state of Denmark. And apposite commentary on the elections from Zapiro.

So, as a wise man once said, let's see how it goes ...

About YBLOG

Formerly PageCount, Out2Lunch, 100Wordsworth, YBLOG ZA and perhaps one or two other incarnations, this blog is grounded in several thousand posts and eight years of blogging. Having dumped my domain, all past posts have been sucked into the memory hole or wayback machine.

But my blogroll remains and that, as any blogger knows, is important. As can be seen here and at the slowly developing Cape Point Nature Reserve blog, I've not much left to say but, with Blogger, Picasa, and Zoopy — South Africa's free, no-limit media-hosting service, I intend saying it anyway.
